Q , WHICH CHANNELS ARE ON BOTH FREEVIEW AND FREESAT ?
Both free services have a common set of core channels, including the BBC, ITV and channel 4 families. ( including HD channels) Russia today, Al Jazeera English, several shopping channels and many radio stations. The Freeview line up does vary in Wales, Ireland and Scotland, where regional services replace some national ones.

Q. WHICH CHANNELS ARE EXLUSIVE TO FREEVIEW ?
Freeview hosts several channels which are not on Freesat including Yesterday, Dave, Viva, 5* and 5USA, Quest, sky news and some radio channels.
Q. WHY CANT I GET ALL THE FREEVIEW CHANNELS ?
Most of the country receives Freeview from a main transmitter which broadcasts the full 40 ish TV channels. Some areas can only receive relay transmitters which broadcast just 15 Freeview channels including Freeview HD.
Q. WHEN DOES MY AREA SWITCH TO FREEVIEW ?
Most of the UK will have gone digital by the end of 2011, but you can check your specific switchover date with Digital UK or by phoning 08456 50 50 50 .
After the switchover digital channels will be available at a higher power than before, the last area’s to switch will be in summer 2012.
Q. DO I NEED A NEW AERIAL OR BOOSTER ?
If you can receive analogue TV without much snowy noise on screen, then your Freeview reception after switchover will be fine. If your aerial cables are very old, this may be a good time to replace them.
If you have a signal amplifier and you lose reception at digital switchover, the increased power may be overloading your TV or receiver.
Either remove the booster or turn the gain down, and you should get your picture back. Indoor aerials should work better after switchover because transmission power is being significantly increased.
Q. IS DIGITAL SWITCHOVER THE END OF THE PROCESS ?
There may be some regional Freeview retunes in 2013 after digital switchover, because some multiplexes are being moved to make space for Europe wide high speed mobile broadband.

Q. WHAT CHANNELS ARE EXCLUSIVE TO FREESAT ?
There are more than 50 free channels not available on Freeview, including CBS’s Drama, reality and action channels, The Horror Channel, Bet , True Movies, Movies4Men, Food Network plus many more.
Q. MUST I USE A SPECIAL RECEIVER TO GET FREESAT ?
Any free to air satellite receiver can pick up Freesat channels, but only Freesat-badged receivers can access the Freesat programme guide and only f=Freesat HD products can access the BBC i Player and ITV player via broadband.
Q. CAN I FIT FREESAT MYSELF OR USE A SKY DISH ?
Freesat dishes are identical to those used by sky and are fairly simple to self install. If you have an existing sky dish, or a sky dish with a quad lLNB and unused outputs, you can use this.
Q. CAN I WATCH NON-FREESAT CHANNELS ON A FREESAT RECEIVER ?
All Freesat receivers have a non Freesat mode which lets you tune in channels that aren’t in the Freesat EPG. The capabilities of this mode vary between manufacturers, and you may not be able to record non Freesat channels.

Q. HOW MUCH DOES SKY COST ?
Sky subscriptions are built from channel packages of about 20 channels , variety, children’s, knowledge, style & culture, music and news events.
The first package costs £ 19.50 a month plus £ 1 per month for each additional package. Five sky sports channel cost add £ 20.25 a month, and the 12 sky movie channels add £ 16 a month. Sky world combines everything for £ 52 a month, including sky 3D.
Q. WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF RECEIVER ?
Free to air can pick up thousands of unencrypted channels. common interface: the Cl slot can hold a conditional access module containing decryption hardware, which in turn holds a viewing card.
What size dish do I need, what am I allowed on my house, and how many can I have ?
On a building up to five storeys you are allowed 1 antenna up to 1 metre across, and a second , or any chimney mounted antenna, may be up to 60 cm. special rules cover buildings in national parks and other designated areas.
Larger dishes require planning permission.
Take care when sitting the dish, especially if you have more than one, using chimney breasts and eaves disguise.
Non metallic paint can be used to blend into buildings.
Q. HOW CAN I GET MORE THAN ONE SATELLITE
Fixed dishes : a multi-feed bracket or mono block LNB ban pick up extra satellites, and are selected using DiSEqC switches.
A motor can be added to dishes up to 1 m to rotate it between satellites. Larger dishes will need a powerful 36 v motor drive and positioner.
Q. HOW CAN I WATCH ENCRYPTED SATELLITE CHANNELS ?
The legal route is to obtain a viewing card and CAM , usually via import.
There’s no official market for this, but the grey market is legal in the EU provided there‘s no commercial gain from your use of equipment. It will almost certainly break the contract under which the card was provided, so the broadcaster can cut you off at any time. Many receivers can be hacked to emulate the CAM and card. Distribution of these codes, and instructing how to use them, is piracy and is a criminal offence.
Q. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF LINUX BASED RECEIVERS ?
Many receivers are now based on the Linux PC operating system, and most famous is the dream box and it‘s enigma operating system. Linux based devices can be programmed to do almost anything the hardware is capable of, with plug ins for media players , spectrum analysers, blind search. DiSEqC control, home and internet media streaming or wallpaper and menus.
Q. WHAT ABOUT ANALOGUE SATELLITE TV ?
The last remaining German analogue satellite TV channels can be found on Astra 1 at 19.2E and will bee shut down on April 30 2012, France will close it’s analogue on Atlantic bird 3 at 5W in November 2011,
