Earlier in the week we called to a job to quote for a new TV aerial, upon arrival the gentleman greeted us and informed us that his neighbour was recently having aerial works undertaken. He needed an aerial erector in Scunthorpe. He had asked the installer carrying out the work to pop round and quote him for his aerial fault which had only recently began to occur.
He explained that when the installer appeared he simply looked at his TV screen and told him he needed a new TV aerial as his old one was now no use due to the recent Digital Switchover and he would be looking at the best part of £180.00 for a new aerial supplied and fitted – he came to this conclusion without using a professional meter to test it – BUT by simply looking at the screen?!?
Luckily the chap was switched on and decided to get a second opinion from the best aerial erector in Scunthorpe.
He realised that it seemed strange he would need a new aerial as we were in a great reception area and if the aerial had worked prior to the Digital Switchover there is no reason why it shouldn’t be working now…..
Connecting our spectrum analyser to the aerial fly lead and testing the reception from his aerial we found – as expected every signal was there with abundance.
The chap asked why he was having the problem of blocking and break up now as he hadn’t had it before, after a quick look at the TV the problem was obvious the BBC channels tuned into the TV were from a completely different TV Transmitter – they were being picked up from the back of the aerial and as they were on a lower frequency than the wanted BBC channels the TV had sorted them into the wrong place – the wanted BBC channels had been allocated to the 800 numbers.
A quick manual re tune selecting the correct frequencies and the addition of an attenuator the fetch the incoming signals down to prevent tuner swamping and overload and the job was complete.
The final price?!?
A basic call out charge and the price of an attenuator.
That’s a saving of the best part of £140.00
